If you're ready to graduate from the friends-with-a-truck moving scenario, it's time to hire professional movers to take care of your packing and transportation needs. For anyone who has moved their entire household by themselves, a moving company may seem like the greatest luxury. It's not an entirely hands-free proposition, however. Once you hire a moving company, there are certain items you must take care of yourself.

The movers and packers are only responsible for wrapping and packing your non-perishable items and transporting them for you. They will pack them in the condition they find them, spotless or otherwise. Empty your refrigerator and freezer and clean out the interior. Clean the inside of your microwave oven. Empty the dishwasher and store all your dishes in the same cupboard. Wash all your clothing and fold or hang it neatly. Empty all trash cans, removing the garbage bags and replacing them with fresh ones the morning of the move.

It may be a few days before you have access to all your belongings, depending on how many boxes you have and how they're arranged in your new home. Pack duffel bags with enough clothing to last a long weekend, along with entertainment items such as handheld games, portable DVD players and movies and a few paperback books. Pack a bag with all your most valuable belongings, including jewelry, artwork, important papers and any priceless mementoes you may own.

Moving Day

Photograph or videotape your most expensive belongings as proof of their condition before the move. If you find a broken television or snapped table leg after the fact, you will have evidence to back up your insurance claim. Find someone to entertain your children for the day so they don't get in the way of the movers. Have a neighbor or friend watch your pets as movers can't be responsible for watching them. Provide coffee and donuts in the morning and some hamburgers, pizza or sub sandwiches at lunch time. It's not a necessity, but it's a nice touch that will be appreciated by the people who are working so hard to take care of your belongings.

Key Takeaways:

  • Clean your house as well as belongings
  • Seperate items being moved for more organization
  • Pack a duffel bag of essentials for the day of the move
